Every
second of every day, people die. The enormity of this tragic
reality blissfully eludes us until it strikes close. Then, as
if struck by lightning, our whole world is fried to a crisp.
Everything changes. No longer buffered by the petty and
mundane we, the survivors, are left to sort out the (in)justice.
The
severity of the pain is exponentially proportional to the
closeness we feel toward the dead. Thus the grief is
unfathomable for those closest. But grief will ripple
outward til all in the pond have been splashed by the waves of
sadness. Michael made a big splash in our pond.

In
an industry notoriously void of compassion, grace and gentility,
Michael bucked the trend. While reminiscing about Mike
with a supplier, his comment was "What's such a nice guy
doing in construction?"
Michael
was liked by everyone: His willingness to listen, his
determination and perseverance, and his commitment to the cause
made him special.
I
was not in his inner circle of close friends and family. I
was a co-worker, an associate. But he touched my
life. My decision to join Essex was influenced by Mike's
presence. I realized many years ago that we spend more
time with the people we work with than our own family. I
saw in Mike the kind of qualities I wanted to be around;
integrity, compassion, loyalty, tenacity. It's important
to feel proud of your affiliations because they reflect on who
we are. I'm proud to say that I was associated with
Mike Logan.
The
only good that comes from a tragedy like this is how we respond,
how it changes us, what it teaches us. For me, I learned
that nice guys don't finish last. Mike Logan will
always be a winner to me!
